Recently, I watched with great dismay a TV report whereby two actors - one posing as a cripple in a wheelchair and the other as a violent, foul-mouthed abuser - were set up in a local shopping mall in view of a hidden camera. Hundreds of people were about. Hundreds and hundreds of people were walking by in all directions. It was a very busy place.

The abuser began yelling and screaming at the man. He hurled abuse at him as his victim cringed his head and shoulders. There was no intervention by anybody. Most people just hurried away. They did not want to get involved. After all, the abuser was behaving like a complete nutter. Maybe he would re-focus his anger on them.

The abuser then upped the ante. He slapped the man in the wheelchair. He slapped him around the head and shoulders and pushed him in the chest. Being in a wheelchair the man could not escape. He was unable to protect himself and he certainly couldn't defend himself.

What did the endless passing parade of people do? Who rushed to his aid? You guessed it. Nobody. Not a single person came to the victim's aid. This was broad daylight. Busy shopping mall. People everywhere. Nobody challenged the abuser.

Most of them just kept walking. Some even watched - from a safe distance, of course. Sure, one or two rang the police but NOBODY personally intervened. Even when the abuser slapped the man in the wheelchair around the head and shoulders people kept walking right on by. They all looked. Most had pained expressions on their face that said: "thank God that is not me!" Everybody gave the two actors a wide berth. It was pitiful!

Thankfully this was just an experiment to show how non-committal society has become. But what if it was true? What if that victim was you and the attacker was real. What would you do? What COULD you do? Can you protect yourself? Can you defend yourself?

What Is The Solution?

There is only one solution. You need to learn to become your own bodyguard. Yes. You can't rely on ANYBODY else helping you. Not these days.

The reality is this - very few people, if any, want to get involved - even to the extent of ringing the police. Let some other good samaritan do that. I'm too busy. I don't have time to help. I don't want to help. I don't want to give a police witness statement. I can't be bothered. I don't want to go to Court as a witness. I DON'T WANT TO GET INVOLVED!
